Text: Colossians 2:16-23
Three Points: Shadows are not the Substance, Hold Fast to the Head, Self-Denial Doesn’t Change the Heart
Open the Scriptures
- Read Colossians 2:16–17. What are the “shadows” Paul refers to, and how do they relate to the “substance” being Christ? How does this shape your view of religious traditions?
- In verse 18, Paul warns against false humility and the worship of angels. What kind of spiritual experiences might tempt people today to feel superior or disconnected from Christ? How does Paul connect these to not “holding fast to the Head”?
- According to verses 19–20, what is the result of staying connected to Christ, the Head? How does Paul describe the growth that comes from God, and what does this say about the church’s role in spiritual maturity?
- Verse 23 says these self-made religious practices “are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.” What does this teach us about the limits of external rules or disciplines to bring about inner change?
Open Your Lives
What is one way someone in your group has encouraged your faith lately? How can we intentionally build one another up this week?
What are some “shadows” in your own spiritual life—traditions or habits—that might sometimes replace your focus on Christ himself? How can we keep the main thing the main thing?
When do you feel tempted to “appear spiritual” rather than simply being honest with others (or yourself)? Have you ever used spiritual language (like “I’ll pray about it”) to avoid something uncomfortable?
Paul says growth happens when we stay connected to the Head—Christ—through the body—the church. How connected do you feel to others in the body of Christ right now? What step could help you lean in more?
