What’s the difference between believing in a doctrine of resurrection and believing in a person who is resurrection and life? 3. What do the descriptions of Jesus being “deeply moved,” “greatly troubled,” and the simple line “Jesus wept” tell us about his attitude toward human suffering and death in this passage? 4. Why do you think the religious leaders want to kill Jesus after he’s raised Lazarus from the dead? Open Your lives: 1. When someone is grieving, what is one specific thing you could say or do that would show compassionate presence without using empty platitudes? 2. How would you honestly answer Jesus’ question “Do you believe this?” about “I am the resurrection and the life” when you think about your own fear of death? 3. Think of a time you avoided or entered into sitting with someone in sorrow; what is one different action you would take now to “mourn with those who mourn”? 4. Which do you tend to need, or offer, more when facing suffering: bracing truth or quiet presence? Why do you think that is? |
