Mark 10:17-31 – November 9, 2025

Text: Mark 10:17-31; Mark 12:41-44
1. In Mark 10:17–22, what does the rich man’s question “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” and his claim to have kept the commandments tell us about how he understood righteousness?2. In Mark 10:21 Jesus tells the man to sell all, give to the poor, and follow him. How does that command reveal the root problem the man faces (look at the First Commandment and the idea of serving two masters)?3. Compare Mark 10 (the rich young man) with Mark 12:41–44 (the poor widow). What contrast does Jesus draw about the value of people’s giving and where true “treasure” is stored?

Open your lives

1. What might be the single “one thing” in your life that could become an ultimate trust or rival god, like the rich man’s wealth?2. What is your current view, and relationship with, money? How does your current relationship with money reveal what you actually depend on?3. Richard Foster gives 5 challenges as it relates to materialism/consumerism. Which of these 5 do you want to start practicing more consistently in your life?- Buy things for their usefulness rather than their status. – Reject anything that is producing an addiction in you. – Develop the habit of giving things away. – Refuse to be propagandized by the custodians of modern gadgetry.
– Shun anything that distracts you from seeking first the kingdom of God.
